Helpful tips to cut down on moving costs

Moving can be expensive whether you are planning to shift across town or to a different state. Although the best way to cut back on moving costs is to take care of the entire relocation process on your own, there are times when hiring a professional moving company is the only alternative. Fortunately, there are still ways through which you can cut back on your expenses.

Get rid of unnecessary clutter

A lot of people are hoarders of things that they should sell, give away or throw away, such as clothes that no longer fit them or a crib that is no longer in use. Packing things you do not need is a waste of time and money. Taking useless stuff with you will just clutter your new house by taking up space.

Dismantle your furniture

If you have furniture items such as, tables, beds, sofas, bookshelves, etc. that can be dismantled, then make sure you uninstall them on your own. Dismantled items will take up less space in the truck. Also, reassembling the items on your own when they reach your new place will help in bringing down the overall cost.

Do the packing yourself

If you can do the entire packing on your own that should bring the moving expenses down considerably. But make sure the boxes are properly marked with item names. Also, request the moving service to put all the boxes in one room rather than to their designated rooms. Doing so will help you save on the hourly fee as it will take less time for the staff to get the job done.

Avoid shifting during the peak season

A lot of families with kids try to move during summer break. This time is normally considered peak season and the charges to use professional movers are unbelievably high. If possible, you should try a different season such as, children's winter break. You can also try to move during the middle of the month. Movers charge higher rates if they move at the beginning or end of the month.

Buy your own boxes

Asking local business and grocery stores for packing boxes can save you a lot of money. Also, if you’re relocating due to a job, see if your employer can offer moving reimbursement.

Compare rates

When hiring a moving service, compare at least four service providers to make sure that you are getting a reputable mover at the best price. Also, when speaking to them ask for discounts.

Moving to a different house whether a few blocks away or in a different state is not an easy job. It is not only the cost involved but also the emotional part of leaving a place you and your family are attached to. Experienced or professional movers can make the entire journey more comfortable and easy for you. They will take care of all your requirements and make sure all your memories are securely transported to your new home. However, it is important to choose a service provider wisely. Paying a little extra is far better than losing your belongings or finding them damaged ir broken by the time you start to unpack.
